Owen at (almost) six months
It won't be Owen's half-birthday until Wednesday, but close enough. Here's what he's been up to lately:
Eating: We started solids this month! He now eats rice cereal, sweet potatoes, and carrots (the latter two lovingly prepared by chef Eric, who did his part to stimulate the economy by buying a real food processor, the better to make baby food with, my dear). Owen loves to hold the spoon himself and pull it to his mouth. He also likes drinking cold water from a cup, although at least half of it runs down his front.
Motor skills: In the last few days he has started to sit up unassisted for two or three seconds at a time. With support, he sits very well. He is adept at rolling over and has figured out that rolling repeatedly in the same direction provides a degree of (gasp) independent mobility. He has gotten as far as three feet from his starting point. Time to start the babyproofing.
Socializing: He loves seeing the "big kids" and his caregivers at Sacred Heart day care. He babbles and giggles with us at home and is intensely interested in everything around him. We took him to the zoo when his Grammy Pat was visiting two weeks ago, and he had a blast petting the miniature goats (as you see in the picture). There is also a kitten at day care, which is another great thing to pet.
Health: Unfortunately, the downside to day care is the germ factory. He had a cold for almost three weeks in September and early October, got healthy for not quite a week, and then came down with croup. A week after our visit to the ER, his cough is slowly going away, but he's still in a rather fussy mood because of the impending TOOTH! that we expect to cut through any day now. He's slimmed down a bit, too - at his checkup yesterday, he was 27 inches long, 17 lbs 2 oz - which is 75th percentile for height but only 50th for weight.
What's next? Baby's first Halloween, of course! Expect pictures next weekend.
