The Worst Day of His Life

Owen had his two month checkup yesterday. He was 12 lbs, 11 oz and 23 3/4" (but his legs weren't quite straight - the kid's got muscle tone! - so we're calling it 24). But the really memorable part was...(ominous music)... starting vaccinations. That is to say, shots. Oh dear. The experience made me aware of just how rarely Owen goes all the way to the maximum Purple Face and Screaming Bloody Murder mode. And it was literally a bit bloody - I guess the nurse hit a bit of a blood vessel with one of the shots, so when we picked him up there was blood running down his leg and we had to grab another nurse out of the hallway to come and fix him up. Of course, he didn't exactly like getting the band-aids pulled off, either - just as he was beginning to calm down from the shots themselves. He alternated between sleeping fitfully and crying for most of the afternoon. If the doctor hadn't prepared me beforehand, I would have been absolutely wrecked by dinnertime. Oh wel...

Latest developments

Sorry, no new photos today, just a run-down of recent events in the world of All Things Owen: 1. Poop strikes: The kid has decided he doesn't need to poop. He went six days in a row last week without a single one. Yes, we took him to the doctor to make sure nothing was wrong. No, nothing was wrong. In fact... 2. Weight gain: Owen has passed the 12-lb mark. The pediatrician calculated that he has gained 1 1/3 oz per day since the previous visit. 1 oz per day is considered normal. 3-6 month clothes no longer look baggy on him. 3. Socialization: Yay! Fun stuff! He's made some great strides here in the last two weeks. If he's crying, he calms down when he sees us or hears our voices. He's smiling and gurgling and cooing on a daily basis. When he's very alert and paying attention, he will try to mimic us if we make funny faces (big open mouth or sticking out the tongue). 4. Motor skills: It's still mostly accidental when Owen's hand-waving results in his catchin...

Today was Owen's first MLB game! And he has an Official Certificate from the AT&T Park guest services to prove it (ultimate in stupid freebies, but still very cute). True to form, he slept through the whole thing except for about 15 minutes in the 6th when he woke up to eat. My first true nursing-in-public experience was made much easier by the piss-poor attendance - I just went up to the top row and there was literally no one within twenty feet of us in any direction (and only one guy within about fifty feet, about four rows below). The Giants lost the game, no big surprises there. We've been reading Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone to Owen since before he was born. Last night we got to the Mirror of Erised.
